Application of ABS in Automotive Industry
ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) has always played an important role in the production of automobile parts. Although PP comes from behind in the production of auto parts, the noble status of ABS in high-end car parts can not be shaken and completely replaced by PP. The noble status of ABS is related to the good characteristics of ABS: thermoplastic ABS resin is widely recognized as an engineering material that can be freely designed, with outstanding aesthetics, flow, toughness, dimensional stability and high heat resistance. ABS can be offered in a wide range of grades, including low-odor ABS, heat-resistant ABS, matting ABS, electroplated ABS and weather-resistant ABS, and ABS has a wide range of applications in automotive interior and exterior trim components. In the interior, ABS can be used to produce door panels, instrument panel trim frames, glove boxes, central control instrument panels, air conditioning outlets, etc. On the exterior, ABS is used to manufacture cooling grilles, frames, license plates, decorations, etc.
1. An important goal pursued by low-odor ABS automotive interiors is to reduce the volatility of materials and improve the air quality inside automobiles, and low-odor materials are one of the goals pursued by automobile manufacturers and automotive material manufacturers. In the automobile indoor air quality conditions, the small molecular organic volatiles in the plastic are easy to migrate to the surface of the plastic products and volatilize into the indoor air, causing a bad odor feeling to the occupants. ABS material that meets the standard requirements of automobile manufacturer can be prepared by selecting appropriate matrix resin, modifying it and controlling appropriate processing conditions.Low-odor ABS materials are mainly used in the production of interior components such as door panels, instrument panel trim frames, glove boxes, central control instrument panels, air conditioning outlets, especially those that need to withstand higher temperatures and conduct air.
2. Heat resistant ABS For some parts that need to withstand higher temperatures, the heat resistance of ABS needs to be improved. A common way to improve the heat resistance of ABS is to blend ABS with PC to make ABS/PC alloy. Heat-resistant ABS is usually used to manufacture heat-resistant components such as air conditioning vents and cooling grilles. For the heat dissipation grille, improve the heat resistance, can prevent the deformation of the parts, so as to prevent the coating from falling off due to deformation, it is also useful ABS or ASA manufacturing. Due to the large area and the need for impact resistance, PC/ABS alloy is also used. The fenders of high-end cars are also made of ABS/PC alloy.
3. The strong light reflection in the cab of an ABS car can cause discomfort and fatigue for the driver, and affect the driver's vision at night. Therefore, matting ABS has a wide range of applications in automotive interior components. Since ABS is a kind of engineering plastic with high finish, in the modification process, we chose a resin grade with relatively low finish and wide molecular weight distribution. And choose sheet or needle shaped, large particle size filler. This can improve the surface roughness of the product, so that the light is scattered and the extinction effect is achieved.
4. Matting ABS is used to manufacture components such as steering wheels and central control dashboards.

Electroplating grade ABS Although ABS has a good aesthetic effect, in order to pursue a better aesthetic effect, it is often necessary to carry out surface beauty treatment such as electroplating and painting of ABS. Electroplating grade ABS is obtained by selecting ABS with certain rubber content and rubber particle size and modifying it to improve its polarity. Electroplated ABS is mainly used in cooling grille, decoration and other components.
6. General ABS because it contains double bonds, it is easy to degrade under the action of sunlight and hot oxygen and powder, discolor and lose part of its mechanical properties. Therefore, ABS for exterior trim parts should generally be weather-resistant ABS. There are many varieties of weather resistant ABS, such as ACS, AES and ASA. Among them, ASA is the best variety of weather resistance at present, which is the product of replacing malebutene rubber in ABS with acrylic rubber.
